Safety and Security - Rugby BID Rangers

75% of businesses surveyed in an independent piece of research thought the Rugby Rangers were important or very important.

Ranger

There are seven rangers patrolling the town centre from 8am until 6pm six days a week. Rangers often help tackle problems with anti-social behaviour, particularly if there are groups of youths gathering in areas of the town centre and they are also briefed regularly on a number of criminal ‘targets’ who they watch out for in the BID area.

Key activities of the Rugby Rangers:

Assisting businesses to tackle crime...

Rangers also provide additional support to businesses in tackling crime, from security patrols in shops at vulnerable times through to escorting staff to their cars when groups of youths have been reported to be causing trouble.

Providing a service to the public...

The rangers do not just offer support to businesses but they are also there to offer help and advice to the public. From dealing with first aid incidents to lost children, the rangers have become a recognised and trusted face of Rugby town centre.

Acting as a visible deterrent...

The high visibility of the rangers coupled with improved camera coverage around the town centre has been a major factor in the reduction of crime. The physical presence of Rugby rangers is increased within the town centre during busy periods such as Christmas as well as static patrols at busy pedestrian areas and car park patrols to deter out-of town criminals and reduce theft from cars.

Working with CCTV operators & police to spot potential criminal activity...

Rugby rangers are trained to identify hot spot areas within the town centre as well as potential targets. They work closely with CCTV operators and police to monitor and sometimes apprehend criminals. Rangers are often first to the scene of a crime and they have been trained on how to preserve the crime scene and establish witnesses in order to support the police.

Reducing theft from vehicles...

Theft of items from vehicles has fallen significantly since the BID began. This considerable reduction has been a result of work carried out by the BID in conjunction with Warwickshire police. The high visibility of the Rangers coupled with improved camera coverage around the town centre has been a major factor in the reduction. Work has also been carried out by the rangers to inform the public on keeping their valuables safe with information left on car windscreens if valuable items have been visible through the windows.
